Eat Dragon Fruit To Lower Blood Glucose Levels!

by Lee Sok Lian|李淑莲

eat-dragon-fruit-to-lower-blood-glucose-levels-1Besides papayas, the other fruit I never tire of eating is the dragon fruit or pitaya, discovered and enjoyed by a growing number of people for its many health benefits as well as rich sweet taste! The flesh of the dragon fruit has been described as being akin to the kiwi fruit, only firmer, more interesting and delicious, in my view.

It is only in recent years that the dragon fruit --- with its unusual green scales and speckled flesh --- is gaining greater acceptance and popularity. It is also becoming more easily available, being grown commercially in Asia. The fruit can be served whole, in salads, as spreads and jams, or even as a beverage (juiced). In some parts of the world, dried or preserved dragon fruit is extremely popular.

Eat Durians For Health And Happiness!

by Lee Sok Lian|李淑莲

“During durian season, entire families would flock to stalls for a durian feast. One evening, Siew Khim’s parents took the children to a roadside durian stall near their home. The distinctive aroma of durian filled the air, titillating taste buds. Converging on the durian stall, everyone sat on little makeshift stools and benches around the stall and waited expectantly for the durians to be opened and offered to them by the seller. Seeing that all the stools and benches were occupied, Siew Khim made do with her rubber slippers. She made herself comfortable and started sinking her teeth into the fragrant, succulent yellow flesh that yields such pleasure to durian die-hards.”

Eat Papayas For Health And Beauty!

by Lee Sok Lian|李淑莲

eat-papayas-for-health-and-beauty-1Available year round, the papaya is my all-time favorite fruit. I believe I owe my current health to the vast amounts of fruits I have been consuming for as long as I can remember. I must confess I find it hard to eat the same fruit seven days in a row, thirty days in a month, but the papaya is truly in a class of its own. I could eat it every day and not tire of it. I love its natural sweetness, and the smooth, creamy, butter-like consistency that’s hard to describe. Whenever I am asked about my high energy, or the glow on my face, or both, I would laugh and say: “Fruit in the morning, and laughter!”

Studies have shown that increasing our consumption of plant foods decreases the risk of obesity, overall mortality, diabetes and other ailments while promoting healthy eyes, skin and hair. One enjoys the burst of energy and overall lower weight from daily consumption of fruits.

Eat Watermelon For Weight Loss!

by Lee Sok Lian|李淑莲

eat-watermelon-for-weight-loss-1Watermelons belong to the cucurbitaceae family comprising the cantaloupe, squash, pumpkin, cucumber and gourd, all of which grow and flourish on vines on the ground. I love walking through the watermelon patch on Mahota Farm on Sun Island and harvesting a fully ripened fruit for lunch, having developed a great liking for the fruit the last couple of years in this country of blistering hot summers. On a really hot and sultry day, nothing beats a few slices of this sweet, cool and refreshing fruit which quickly lifts one’s flagging spirits and boosts one’s energy.

China, accounting for over half of the world’s supply of the fruit, is by far the largest watermelon-producing country. Watermelons are plentiful, cheap, and readily available, and served in practically every home and restaurant across the country in the summer months. In many other parts of the world, watermelons are readily available all year long.
