Tan Hong Khoon

Tan Hong Khoon is the President and Chairman of Prime Group International. The group owns and operates a diverse portfolio of businesses and investments, ranging from retail to golf, education and agriculture.

Hong Khoon is a second-generation Chinese Singaporean, the youngest amongst thirteen children. Upon graduation from the National Taiwan University in the late 70s with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry, he returned home and expanded the family business. This became the largest commercial pig farm in Singapore. Hong Khoon’s first test presented itself in the form of a government policy issued in 1984 to phase out pig farming just two years after he had acquired a piece of land to double the production.

Against all odds, Hong Khoon successfully transformed the family business into a thriving chain of supermarkets. He has never looked back since and the foundation of his resilient self was laid.

Driven by his sense of mission, Hong Khoon neglected his health by dedicating long hours to work, beyond what was manageable, and eventually succumbed to chronic diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. These stress-induced conditions led to a cardiac arrest in 2007. Post operation, his surgeons’ warnings against his work habits came as the second major test of his life.

Hong Khoon was back at work six months after his heart operation. He became even more driven, not just in his entrepreneurial endeavors, but also in his pursuit of a more balanced life. His career has come full circle since he began working on his latest project, the Mahota Farm. Spending most of his time on the farm and leading a more active lifestyle than before, Hong Khoon’s diabetic condition has stabilised, without the aid of medication.

Hong Khoon has set out not only to achieve better personal health, but also to motivate all the people he loves and cares about. He has extended the same “taisheng” philosophy to his corporate management style and business strategic planning.

This Symposium is the result of his wish to share some of these thoughts and ideas which have shaped and defined his path to health and happiness.

Topic: Journey to Good Health

Like many busy executives living life in the fast lane, Mr. Tan Hong Khoon had neglected his health, working hard and putting in long hours at the office, often beyond what was manageable, and therefore eventually succumbing to poor health. As the keynote speaker at this Symposium, Mr. Tan will share his story of how he defeated high blood pressure, diabetes and high blood cholesterol. How a cardiac arrest changed his perspective in life, his vision, lifestyle and his entire business model, in an effort to create a sustainable environment for all.
