5 Compelling Reasons For Working In Shanghai

by Lee Sok Lian|李淑莲

Economists predict that China will overtake the U.S. as the world’s largest economy by 2018. China is experiencing rapid changes and development, with Shanghai setting the pace of change as Asia’s economic powerhouse. There is no place on earth I’d rather be now.

Not knowing Mandarin is no hindrance. Just engage one of the many English-speaking Chinese tutors or language partners who advertise their services on social media. Everyone benefits from this mutual exchange that often takes place in a warm, lively and convivial setting (Starbucks, Costa Coffee and the like) so conducive to learning!

Remember Me With Smiles And Laughter

by Lee Sok Lian|李淑莲

“It doesn’t matter if you have five friends or five thousand friends. When it all comes down to it, popularity means nothing. All that matters is that you know these five will be there holding your hand, as the five thousand walk by.”  -- Source unknown

Whichever way I look these days, especially in metropolitan image-conscious Shanghai, everyone around me is clutching a smartphone --- including silver-haired seniors belonging to the retiree demographic. Whether they understand all the apps on their phones or not is quite another matter. And anyway, these elderly subway commuters invariably have tech-savvy grandchildren in tow, ready to help them navigate those gleaming touchscreens.

Taking a well-deserved break is good for the soul and rejuvenates the heart and mind at the same time, which always increases our productivity and joy. I am now furiously writing away, happily inspired and tapping into the creativity that’s just been unleashed!
